Jasreen Gill grew up understanding something that most people only learn when they're sitting across from an attorney for the first time: the legal system is hard. It's confusing, it moves slowly, and when you're going through something as personal as a divorce or a custody dispute, navigating it can feel like trying to find your way in the dark.
That understanding didn't come from a textbook. It came from who she is and where she comes from. And it's the reason she chose family law.
"The legal system is difficult and not a fun process," Jasreen says simply. "If I can help make it easier for even one person, that's the goal."
Jasreen joined Next Legal after earning her Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law, where she graduated with honors, earned the Law Honor Scholarship, and received Pro Bono Service Recognition with High Distinction. That last distinction tells you something important about her: she didn't just study family law. She went out and did it, long before she was required to.
Through USD's Pro Bono Legal Advocates club, which partnered with the Legal Aid Society of San Diego, Jasreen spent nearly two years at the Legal Aid Society's Temporary Restraining Order Clinic, where she sat with people at some of the most frightening moments of their lives. She interviewed clinic participants, helped them complete the legal forms they needed, and reviewed their declarations to identify the facts most likely to secure their protection both in seeking restraining orders and in assisting with responses. In her third year, she stepped into a leadership role as Chair of Pro Bono Legal Advocates' domestic violence recruitment efforts, helping bring more students into that critical work.
She also spent time as a judicial intern at the Contra Costa County Superior Court, the same court system where many Next Legal clients have their cases heard, giving her an early and formative view of how judges think, what they look for and how cases play out in practice.
What ties all of that together is something harder to teach than any legal skill: Jasreen genuinely cares about the people sitting across from her. She understands that when someone walks into a family law office, they're not looking for a lecture but rather they're someone who not only understands it, but who will help them get through it.
Jasreen is a first-generation legal professional and a proud member of the First-Generation Legal Professionals association at USD, as well as the Women's Law Caucus and the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association. She was born and raised in the East Bay, which means she knows this community and she's committed to serving it.
Outside the office, you'll find her deep in a novel, discovering music across languages and genres, or gaming with the same competitive focus she brings to her cases.
