Paul F. Donsbach

Managing Partner, Certified Family Law Specialist

“The best outcomes in family law rarely happen in a courtroom. But you win out of court only if you’re prepared to win in it.”

Most family law cases do not need to become wars. The ones that do usually escalate because one side believes it can win by outspending, outlasting, or outmaneuvering the other. That calculation changes the moment opposing counsel understands the case is fully prepared — and that the attorney across the table is genuinely prepared to try it.

That principle has guided Paul's practice for more than three decades. Preparation and the credible ability to litigate are not just the foundation of trial advocacy — they are what makes serious settlement possible. Clients who retain a lawyer genuinely equipped for trial frequently find they never need one.

Paul is a Certified Family Law Specialist certified by the State Bar of California, a credential held by a small fraction of California attorneys that requires documented trial experience, peer review, and a rigorous specialty examination. He has practiced family law exclusively for the past thirteen years. Before that, he spent nearly two decades in complex commercial and corporate litigation at large law firms — work that built the business valuation, forensic accounting, and trial skills that high-asset divorce and complex family law cases demand.

In more than 33 years of complex litigation and trial work, Paul has successfully resolved hundreds of cases for clients ranging from celebrities and high-net-worth individuals to small business owners and families, and has won hundreds of trials, evidentiary hearings, and arbitrations, including a number of high-profile cases involving notable figures in the worlds of sports, pop music, film, television, and technology.

Experience

Paul's substantive experience spans the full range of complex family law matters: divorce and legal separation, high-asset divorce, business valuation, partnership dissolution, executive and equity compensation, cryptocurrency, asset discovery and tracing, custody, support, and restraining orders.

He has been a licensed attorney in California since 1994. He is also licensed to practice law in Hawaii, Texas, and Pennsylvania, has handled cases in more than ten states and before the United States Supreme Court, and his overseas legal experience includes matters in Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

Representative Matters

  • High-asset divorces and litigation involving celebrities, musicians, a film director, an Academy-Award winning actor, a major sports team, Fortune 500 CEOs, and technology entrepreneurs;

  • International child custody move-aways to Asia, Europe, and Latin America, as well as numerous domestic move-aways and complex custody disputes;

  • Domestic and international asset concealment and money-laundering cases involving hundreds of millions of dollars;

  • Hundreds of child support and spousal support cases, including termination and modification of orders after judgment;

  • Characterization and valuation of businesses in the fields of entertainment, finance, professional services, and technology;

  • Restraining order cases involving alleged domestic violence and abuse, child endangerment and neglect, substance abuse, and criminal activities.

  • Complex mediation and alternative dispute resolution, including multi-jurisdictional and multi-disciplinary professional assistance involving forensic accountants, child psychologists, and technology consultants.

Beyond the Practice

In addition to his legal work, Paul is co-author of The Bronze Scroll, an adventure novel involving an ancient treasure map that reveals the location of legendary artifacts. Praised by national book critics as a "must-read mystery novel" blending The Da Vinci Code with the "fast pace and ancient mystery of an Indiana Jones production," the novel reflects the same instinct for complex, high-stakes problem-solving that Paul brings to his cases — just with considerably more ancient artifacts.
